QUICK HOOK

"Book of Daniel" has officially bought the farm and its few fans are already complaining that the "religious right" pulled the trigger.  Jim Naughton has more liberal paranoia here and also wonders whether he should keep the blog going.  I hope he does.  His site's probably the most serious and thoughtful liberal Anglican blog around.

I said it before and I'll say it again: if you want to create a drama about Episcopalians, use real ones.  Create a real Episcopal parish, one torn apart by Gene Robinson or whatever other controversy you want to create, and have the rector try to keep things together, all the while wondering whether he really supports what ECUSA has done or not.  But this lame "Desperate Housewives" pseudo-edginess is already old and completely played out.

I'm sorry; I must have missed something----Isn't "Desparate Housewives" *about* the Episcopal Church? I mean, the "house" is the House of Bishops", right?

I had the misfortune of reading all the posts to the nbc.com board (to which you provide a link). Good night. What a bunch of conspiracy nuts. Evil nasty right wing republican Christians oh my! Oh please.

I found it interesting that the show's writer did not participate in the "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy" party that went on in the thread on the cancellation. I also found most of the liberal "whining" very boring. I cannot remember when I have heard more un-liberal invective used against those who opposed the "party line" opinion, unless it was the last time I read the Salty Vicar's thread where he was whining because Al Kimmel said the Episcopal Church was no longer "Christian."

Gee, you would think the forces of "tolerance" and "love" would be more forgiving, but apparrently the passage about loving your enemies was left out of their "revised" book of Scripture Wise Sayings by the Guru Jesus.

I have not commented on the show. One reason is that I did not watch it (no NBC channel on my DISH network package). Even had an NBC affiliate been available, I probably would not have bothered, because the premise of the show and the "promos" NBC put out were enough to convince me that it would be a waste of my time.

I have yet to figure out what was supposed to be so "origina;" or "edgy" in this show. A dysfunctional family headed by an Episcopal priest? I've known some of those in real life (not quite as dysfunctional ss Daniel Webster's, but close) and they were not amusing at all. A drunk for a wife, a gay Republican for a son, a drug using/dealing teen-age Brittney Shields wannabe and a randy teen-age boy who cannot keep his pants zipped - this is supposed to be original TV drama/comedy/writing? Give me a break.

The only thing "edgy" about the show was the appearances by Jesus - all meant to show what an up-to-date, hip guy he would be today. The only thing original about this whole thing was the idea that no one would be offended enough by it to mount a protest. I'm kinda sorry the AFA made such a big deal out of it, because I would have been happier if it had died a natural death. Instead, I now have to suffer through the paranoia of leftie 'Piskies who want to claim that the evil right-wing, flat-footed fundamentalist crowd killed this marvel of television art. It's enough to make one hurl!

RickW, unfortunatly I read many of the comments, too. All I can say is what a bunch of nut-jobs. Geeze.

Liberals always complain when their shows get cancelled & blame it on a conspiracy or a fundamentalist boycott. But they forget that TV (& radio) is based on just one thing -- ratings. The show was a loser from the get-go & got no ratings. Just as we predicted.

Chris, do you have archives on this blog? I'm pretty sure I predicted that "The Book of Daniel" would be off the air by the end of January but I don't know how to locate that comment.

It will be sorely missed (or hissed or whatever). I cannot believe anyone anywhere saw this as appropriate entertainment. How about an inside expose of the NAACP, NRA, or Southern Baptist Convention,or Metropolitan Community Church? Who will be next?

Joshua,

Not at the moment. I've had some luck searching for individual posts on Google. In their Advanced Search, you can restrict searches to a particular domain(mcj.bloghorn.com).

Thanks, I found it at http://mcj.bloghorn.com/2140 I'm kind of surprised that you don't have archives available on the blog; this is the only blog I know of that doesn't.
